Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has reignited a heated discussion about songwriting authenticity in Afrobeats after declaring emphatically that he writes every song himself.

Speaking during a livestream on Twitch with Plaqueboymax, Burna Boy emphasised that music is a deeply personal act of self-expression for him and dismissed the growing trend of outsourced songwriting in Nigeria.

The artist contrasted his approach with what he observed in Los Angeles, where collaborating with multiple songwriters is common, but criticised this practice becoming prevalent in his home country’s music scene.

Burna Boy’s comments have stirred fans and industry insiders into revisiting old ghostwriting controversies involving artists like Ceeza Milli, Yonda, and Peruzzi, who have previously claimed credit for contributing to hits such as “On the Low,” “Dangote,” and “Pull Up.”

While Burna Boy acknowledged in 2020 that Peruzzi helped on one track, he firmly denied involvement in other alleged collaborations, insisting that his music remains fully authored by himself.
