Michael Carrick, the newly appointed Manchester United manager, has spoken glowingly about his early days in charge, calling the job the “ultimate role” and insisting he’s “loving what I’m doing” despite the pressures of succeeding the sacked Ruben Amorim.
In an interview, the former United midfielder – who won five Premier League titles as a player emphasised his deep connection to the club while focusing on results.
“It’s not a stock answer – for me, it’s the ultimate role. I’m really enjoying it, I love what I’m doing,” Carrick said.
“I’m fortunate. I feel privileged to be in the position I am.”
Carrick took over in late January 2026 after Amorim’s dismissal amid a dismal run of results.
He’s since introduced four new squad rules centered on discipline and unity, aiming to restore calm following months of turmoil.
Reflecting on his mindset, he added, “I said it when I came in – there’s the sentimental side. But, actually, I’m here to do a job now and to make a good team and be successful.”
The 44-year-old dismissed any short-term thinking, declaring, “I don’t decide how long that’s going to be but I love being here and while I’m here, I’ll give everything I can. And I always plan for the long-term future for the benefit of the football club.”
Carrick’s enthusiasm shone through when pressed on his visible joy.
“I’m loving what I’m doing. Again, you know, really good people. The staff are fantastic, the players have been unbelievable,” he said.
“It’s a really good place to come in every single day. And then, obviously, around the city and globally, the reaction and the support that you get – it’s very hard to describe it. It’s incredible.”
When the interviewer teased, “Have you smiled enough?” Carrick shot back with a laugh, “Yeah. Have I smiled enough for you?!”
He hinted at more to come, replying “Possibly!” to suggestions of an extended stay.
