Intense clashes broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, as security operatives barred Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde from entering the party secretariat.

The standoff escalated into a serious confrontation between the governors’ security aides and the operatives enforcing the blockade.

Initially denied entry, the governors were eventually escorted in by their loyal security personnel and supporters, sparking a heated altercation.

The turmoil underscores the deepening crisis within the PDP, which remains sharply divided into rival factions vying for control.

One faction recently held a national convention last week in Ibadan, Oyo State, where they elected Kabiru Turaki as National Chairman and claimed rightful leadership of the party and its assets.

This group is adamant about taking over the party secretariat as the legitimate leadership.

In opposition, a faction loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, disputes the validity of the Ibadan convention.

Led by Abdulrahman Mohammed acting as National Chairman of a parallel structure, and including key figures like Samuel Anyanwu, this group has been contesting control over the PDP offices.

They had also scheduled a congress today, asserting themselves as the authentic party segment.

The event at the party headquarters reflects the ongoing power struggle within the PDP, highlighting the volatility and factionalism threatening the unity and future stability of Nigeria’s major opposition party.
