The approval came at a meeting on Thursday, where President Bola Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name following the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 until October 2025.
Tinubu highlighted that Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Kogi State in the North-Central region, is the first nominee from that zone to head the electoral body.
The President also described him as an apolitical figure, a quality deemed vital for the role.
Council members expressed strong support for the nomination.
Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo praised Amupitan as a man of integrity, reinforcing the broad confidence in his ability to lead INEC.
Following constitutional procedures, the President will now forward Professor Amupitan’s nomination to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The 58-year-old law professor currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Jos, where he has been teaching since 1989.
His academic focus includes Company Law, Evidence, and Corporate Governance. He attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2014.
