The United States President Donald Trump has warned of Cuba’s economic downfall bluntly stating the island nation is “very close to failing” amid severed support from Venezuela.
“Anybody interested in Cuba in this room? Not that many,” Trump remarked in the video clip circulating online.
“Cuba will be failing. Cuba is really a nation that is very close to failing.”
Cuba’s deepening crisis features chronic shortages of food and medicine, widespread blackouts, and hyperinflation, all worsened by U.S. sanctions Trump reinstated upon taking office.
United Nations data shows the country’s GDP contracted by 2% in 2025, fueling a mass exodus of over 500,000 citizens since 2022—many fleeing to the U.S. via risky sea voyages or Nicaragua.
Trump’s statement comes as Venezuela, Cuba’s longtime oil benefactor, faces its own turmoil under tightened U.S. pressure, halting critical fuel and financial aid that propped up Havana’s regime for decades.
