China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, has rebuked the United States for citing Russia or China as pretexts to chase its own agenda, following President Trump’s renewed push to acquire Greenland.

In a press briefing captured in Reuters footage, Mao Ning approached the podium amid overlaid headlines blasting U.S. tactics, signaling Beijing’s retort to Trump’s claim that America must own the Danish territory to thwart Russian militarisation or Chinese expansion in the thawing Arctic.

“China urged the United States not to use other countries as an excuse to pursue its own interests,” the ministry stated, after Trump revived his 2019 bid.

He argued control of Greenland – rich in rare earths comprising 10-20% of global reserves per USGS data – is vital to block rivals amid new shipping lanes that could slash trade routes by 40%.

China countered that its Arctic efforts foster peace and adhere to international law, amid escalating multipolar tensions as China controls 60% of rare earth production key to EVs and renewables.
