The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, when a police patrol team conducting a routine stop-and-search operation intercepted an ash-colored Toyota Camry with tinted windows and a concealed number plate at the NNPC Junction along Kubwa Expressway.

The police officers, following standard operational procedures, politely requested the occupant’s documents and reasons for driving with such a hidden plate, which is against traffic regulations.

This led to a tense exchange between the officers and Lt. Yerima.

Reports mentioned that the naval officer, who had recently been involved in a heated confrontation with the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over a land dispute, was stopped around 6:15 p.m. and questioned by the police for the violation.

Contrary to rumours circulating online about an assassination attempt on Lt. Yerima linked to the earlier altercation with Minister Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command officially debunked these claims.

SP Josephine Adeh, the police spokesperson, clarified that the reports of a high-speed chase involving unmarked vehicles and an attempted assassination were baseless and unverified.

She urged the public to “shun unverified tales that erode trust in institutions,” underscoring that such narratives did not align with any recorded incidents reported to the police or other law enforcement bodies.

The police maintained that the stop was purely procedural because of the concealed number plate and that Lt. Yerima was treated in line with established law enforcement protocols.
