United States President Donald Trump has unleashed a blistering critique of a Supreme Court decision blocking his tariff powers, boasting he could “destroy” foreign trade but decrying limits on slapping a “little fee” on imports.
The Court’s 6-3 ruling in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump held that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not grant the president unilateral authority to impose tariffs, affirming Congress’s constitutional control over commerce and taxation.
“The decision’s incorrect, but it doesn’t matter because we have very powerful alternatives,” Trump fumed in the video.
Trump vented frustration over the perceived absurdity, “I’m allowed to destroy the country, but I can’t charge them a little fee. I could charge them a little 22 cents fee, but I cannot charge under any circumstances. Think of that. How ridiculous is that?”
He doubled down, insisting, “I can do anything I want to do to them. I can embargo. I can do anything I want.”
Defiant, Trump announced a new 10% global tariff anyway, sparking people to brand his rhetoric “unhinged” and “economically reckless.”
