Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the escalating conflict involving Iran, emphasising Tehran’s desire for self-reliance and rejecting Russia’s offer to provide military assistance.

Putin stated, “Iran didn’t want our help. If the situation escalates, we’ll see if they will need help” and clarified that the strategic partnership with Iran does not include a defense clause.

“Iran does not ask Russia for help. Iran did not want to cooperate with Russia on air defense previously,” he said.

He highlighted Iran’s pride in fighting its battles independently noting, “Iran fights the fight alone, they’re proud and want to be self reliant.”

Putin also noted that Russia continues its peaceful cooperation with Iran, including nuclear energy projects, with Russian specialists working at the Bushehr nuclear plant.

He added, “For now they don’t want help.”

The Russian leader offered to mediate between Israel and Iran to find a diplomatic solution that respects Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and Israel’s security.

He condemned Western escalation and called for an end to hostilities, stating, “It seems to me that it would be right for everyone to look for ways to end hostilities and find ways for all parties to this conflict to come to an agreement with each other”.

Putin declined to comment on speculation about the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, saying, “I do not even want to discuss this possibility”.

This stance comes amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and missile sites and amid US uncertainty over military involvement.

Putin’s remarks underscore Russia’s delicate balancing act in the Middle East, maintaining relations with both Tehran and Jerusalem while positioning itself as a potential mediator.
