Israel has formally requested an emergency UN Security Council session, accusing Iran of using cluster munitions in recent ballistic missile strikes on central Israel, including Tel Aviv.
The request follows Iran’s barrages—over 350 missiles since late February 2026—amid the escalating Israel-Iran war sparked by US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Israeli sources, including the IDF and reports from Times of Israel, Haaretz, Reuters, and Jerusalem Post, confirm about half carried cluster warheads, each releasing 20-24 bomblets over wide areas on Saturday evening.
These hit civilian zones, killing at least an elderly couple and causing property damage, while straining Israel’s Iron Dome interceptors.
Cluster munitions are banned by the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions for their indiscriminate effects—ratified by over 120 countries—but neither Israel nor Iran is a signatory.
However, netizens have highlighting the request, including viral videos of explosions, sparked backlash accusing Israel of hypocrisy, citing its past use of clusters in the 2006 Lebanon War and white phosphorus in Gaza.
