Video: Lagos arrests wanted resident over illegal waste dumping

In a decisive move to uphold environmental standards, the Lagos State Government has arrested Mr. Ogunbadejo Olawale for illegal waste dumping in Alapere, Ketu.

The arrest was carried out by a joint operation between the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), following community tip-offs.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, had earlier made a public appeal for help in identifying a man filmed illegally dumping garbage at the Alapere Link Bridge area of the state, noting that there is a reward for anyone who offered any information leading to the successful identification and capture of the suspect.
Wahab stressed that a LAWMA field officer captured the incident with the assistance of a nearby vendor who volunteered to help with surveillance.
The recorded video shows the suspect engaged in the act of indiscriminately disposing of waste, an offense that LAWMA claims he has committed multiple times in recent months.
In a separate statement Wahab announced that the suspect has been arrested that stressing that his arrest is a clear demonstration of the state’s resolve to enforce environmental laws and restore sanity to public spaces.
He wrote, “The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to environmental enforcement with the arrest of Mr. Ogunbadejo Olawale, a resident of No 25, Ajiboye Street, Alapere, Ketu, for illegal waste dumping.
“The arrest was effected by a joint enforcement operation carried out by the operatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), following credible surveillance and tip-offs from members of the community.
“The offender was caught red-handed disposing refuse indiscriminately in public, thereby undermining the government’s efforts toward achieving a cleaner and more hygienic Lagos. His arrest is a clear demonstration of the state’s resolve to enforce environmental laws and restore sanity to public spaces. The suspect will immediately be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant law of the State.”
