The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokun Wahab, in a statement on Thursday stated, “Our enforcement teams have begun strict compliance operations at Alakoro Market on Lagos Island to enforce the ban on single-use plastics and non-biodegradable nylon materials.”
Officers are actively conducting thorough inspections, confiscating prohibited materials, and educating traders about approved eco-friendly alternatives.
Wahab underscored that this initiative aligns with Lagos State’s environmental laws and commitment to sustainability.
Highlighting the broader impact, Wahab explained, “This operation forms part of our broader commitment to eliminate pollutants that damage our ecosystems, block drainage systems, and contribute to flooding across the state. There will be no exceptions to this policy.”
The crackdown is part of the #CleanerLagos campaign aimed at preserving the environment and improving public health by reducing plastic waste and its harmful effects on the city’s drainage and ecosystem.
Traders and residents are encouraged to comply fully to support a cleaner, greener Lagos.
Dailyeconomy on July 1, reported that the Lagos state government announced the initiation of enforcement regarding the prohibition of styrofoam and single-use plastics that are thinner than 40 microns, stating that this measure aims to safeguard public health and the environment.
