In an intensified effort to uphold traffic laws and the current prohibition on commercial motorcycles (Okada), the Lagos State Taskforce has initiated a thorough operation aimed at non-compliant operators.
This heightened enforcement, concentrating on locations with frequent violations, resulted in the confiscation of 63 motorcycles.
Adetauo Akerele, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, reported that the recent enforcement campaign specifically targeted critical areas such as the Mile2 Oke bridge, Mile2 under bridge, Berger Suya, Amuwo Odofin, and Apple junction in Festac.
These sites were recognised as hotspots where “stubborn Okada operators were openly disregarding the state’s traffic laws,” Akerele stated.
A statement by the Director, Press and Public Affairs, Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem states, “In a continued effort to enforce traffic laws and ban on commercial motorcycles in the Metropolis, the Lagos State Taskforce has launched a comprehensive operation targeting recalcitrant motorcycle (Okada) operators who persist in violating the ban on restricted routes, highways, and bridges across the State. This exercise, which has been reinforced in areas where recracirtant Okada riders were noticable in the state, has led to the arrest of 63 motorcycles.
“The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed that the latest enforcement operation was carried out in key areas such as Mile2 Oke bridge, Mile2 under bridge, Berger Suya, Amuwo odofin and Apple junction in Festac area, where recraciritant Okada operators were found blatantly flouting the state’s traffic regulations. The Agency, in collaboration with other security outfits, has vowed to maintain its zero-tolerance approach to violations on these restricted routes.”
“The ban on Okada operations in certain areas was put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all Lagosians, and we will not tolerate any breach of this order. Those who continue to operate in restricted areas, endangering the lives of road users, will face the full wrath of the law.” Akerele noted.
He noted that despite repeated warnings and sensitisation efforts, some operators remain defiant, thereby endangering public safety.
“The 63 motorcycles impounded during today’s operation have been confiscated, and legal action will be taken against the violators,” the statement added.
