Lagos State authorities, led by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, have ordered the immediate closure of Afolabi Ege Market and Afolabi Ege Fruit Market for operating during the mandatory Thursday sanitation exercise.

In a statement released Thursday, Wahab described the incident as “blatant disregard for public health protocols” and emphasized that this action followed “multiple prior warnings” to the markets.

According to Wahab, “We have taken decisive action by immediately shutting down both markets. The closure will remain in effect until market leadership submits a comprehensive compliance plan, all traders undergo mandatory sanitation sensitization training, and LAWMA officials verify completion of a thorough deep-cleaning operation.”

He further stated, “This enforcement action serves as a necessary reminder that sanitation laws exist to protect all Lagosians from disease outbreaks and environmental hazards. Our markets must be partners in maintaining public health standards, not sources of public health risks.”

The affected markets will remain shuttered until all stipulated requirements are met.
