What was intended to be the city’s first celebration of the popular global trend fell apart as attendees reportedly disregarded the event’s fundamental principles.
Rather than adhering to the expected etiquette of sharing cakes with the provided utensils, attendees were filmed grabbing and smashing cakes with their hands, leading to a frenzy that quickly spread online.
Organised by London-based designer Elisa Sunga, the Cake Picnic was designed as a casual gathering where participants bring cakes, relax on blankets, and share slices in a civil manner.
The only requirement for attendance was to bring a cake, with guests encouraged to take photos and serve themselves using the provided utensils.
Only after everyone has had a turn are they allowed to go back for more until all that’s left are crumbs.
However, videos of the Lagos event show a stark contrast to this vision.
Social media users have nicknamed the scene a “royal rumble,” as people are seen shoving, grabbing, and crushing cakes to hoard large portions.
Organisers have also faced criticism online, with some people accusing them of breaking the “no cake, no entry” rule by allowing attendees to pay to get in without bringing a cake.
