Afrobeats superstar DJ Neptune has shared his insights on the current state of the genre, highlighting why global smash hits have become less frequent in recent years.

Speaking on The Echoo Room podcast with Teddy A, he described the past few years as a “constant religion” for Afrobeats.

“Two, three years ago, it was a constant religion. Every year we would have one or two or three global Afrobeats smash hits,” DJ Neptune said.

However, he lamented that the recent decline stems from “personal interest, greed, and lack of professionalism” limiting the genre’s growth.

Despite these hurdles, DJ Neptune remains optimistic about Afrobeats’ future.

He urged up-and-coming artists to prioritise “knowledge, patience, and sustainable career building rather than chasing instant wealth,” advising them: “Don’t get carried away with the frenzy. Don’t be in a hurry to say, ‘I want to drive Benz and all of that.’ Own your stuff. Let’s go back to the drawing board.”

Addressing industry dynamics, the music star also emphasised the importance of co-ownership, especially concerning streaming platforms.

Pointing out that “a lot of these major labels co-own the streaming platforms,” he warned this arrangement “puts them in a better position to control some selling things.”

He called for artists to seek co-ownership as well.
