In a surprising and jovial highlight of UK-Nigeria diplomacy, King Charles III raised a glass at a grand state banquet and declared “Naija no dey carry last,” invoking the iconic Pidgin English phrase to celebrate Nigerian resilience.

The moment, captured in a viral video clip sweeping social media, unfolded during the lavish event honouring Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

As guests from both nations looked on, the King toasted: “Naija no dey carry last,” praising the unyielding spirit of Nigerians and their diaspora in the UK.

He spotlighted the contributions of over 300,000 Nigerians living in Britain, who bolster key sectors like healthcare, business, and beyond.

The phrase, a Nigerian slang staple meaning “Nigeria doesn’t come last,” resonated deeply, drawing cheers and applause.

It underscored the strengthening ties between the two nations amid Tinubu’s high-profile visit, centered on boosting trade deals, enhancing security cooperation, and fostering cultural exchanges.

Tinubu’s two-day trip, his first state visit since taking office, has already yielded pledges for increased investments in renewable energy and joint counter-terrorism efforts.

As the banquet concluded, both leaders reaffirmed commitments to a “post-Brexit partnership” that leverages Nigeria’s youthful population and the UK’s expertise.
