Wilfred Ndidi has been appointed captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
This was revealed in a motivational video shared by the team’s official X account.
Ndidi was seen in the video discussing his new role from a hotel room in team attire, interspersed with footage of players in group huddles, airport lounges, and casual team-building moments that highlight unity and camaraderie.
Teammates praise Ndidi’s leadership while reflecting on the transition from former William Troost-Ekong.
Ndidi emphasised the collective effort required for success.
“It’s a huge responsibility and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” he said.
He added, “We’re all in this together, so we just have this conversation of the task ahead, and it is very important that we all be on the same page.”
Ndidi while speaking about the former captain, William Troost-Ekong remarked, “He’s a great leader, he speaks a lot for the team, stands with the team, and tries to take everything in. I admire him a lot—how outspoken he is.”
He further noted, “Like I said earlier, he speaks for the team, encourages everyone, and he is an amazing guy. I’ve learnt a lot from him.”
Ndidi also addressed the pain of missing the World Cup and the drive to rebound.
“It was a sad one, missing out on the World Cup. And this is another opportunity to correct the wrongs, put smiles on the faces of Nigerians, make the country proud once again,” he declared.
“It’s not going to be an easy task, but we’re really up for it.”
