The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has shifted its stance on a planned nationwide protest, expressing satisfaction with the federal government’s proactive measures against insecurity following a crucial meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
NLC President Joe Ajaero announced the decision during a press conference on Wednesday.
He credited President Bola Tinubu’s assurances for averting the demonstration, framing the dialogue itself as a form of protest that yielded results.
“The point of meeting with the President and sending our message—that’s the message, you know—and that’s the protest. The fact that it has been addressed, I think we have achieved our objective to a substantial extent,” Ajaero stated.
Ajaero highlighted the president’s commitment to national prosperity, noting an agreement to reconvene in January to address lingering issues.
“Mr. President said he has put Nigeria on the map of prosperity, and we agreed that we were going to meet in January to look at some grey areas where we need to touch, which will equally translate to prosperity for the working people of Nigeria,” he added.
While acknowledging that insecurity won’t vanish overnight, Ajaero praised the outlined actions.
“It is not like insecurity will be finished today or will be fully addressed today. But for him to say we are doing A, B, C, D, I think we’re good to go.”
The move comes amid ongoing economic hardships and security challenges, with the NLC opting for continued engagement over street action.
