Video: Okonjo-Iweala exposes AI deepfake scam targeting Nigerians

World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has issued a warning to Nigerians about a circulating AI-manipulated fake video that uses her likeness to deceive the public.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the prominent economist debunked the video’s authenticity and revealed that authorities are investigating.
“Just alerting Nigerians. Another fake AI-manipulated video. The authorities are handling,” she wrote, urging vigilance against scams.
Okonjo-Iweala emphasised her limited social media presence, stating, “As I repeatedly said, I never post anything on Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp. Anything emanating from these sources with my image is not from me. I only post on Twitter/X.”
She added a personal plea, “I just don’t want people to be duped.”
