Victor Osimhen’s stunning hat-trick led Nigeria to a commanding 4-0 victory against Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday.
The win guaranteed Nigeria’s place in the November World Cup qualifying play-off round.
Osimhen opened the scoring in the third minute with a clinical finish from a Samuel Chukwueze assist.
He doubled the lead with a powerful header before halftime and completed his hat-trick with another impressive header early in the second half.
Substitute Frank Onyeka capped the victory with a one-time volley, ensuring Nigeria’s advance.
Despite South Africa topping the group with a 3-0 win, Nigeria finished second, edging Benin Republic by goal difference to secure the crucial play-off spot.
Coach Eric Chelle’s tactical changes included benching captain William Troost-Ekong and introducing key players like Zaidu Sanusi and Adams Akor, who made his full debut after scoring against Lesotho.
The Super Eagles now prepare for the decisive play-offs to extend their World Cup journey.
