According to Sowore, the incident occurred during a protest advocating for improved welfare and pension reforms for retired police officers.
The protest, which drew hundreds of participants from across Nigeria, was conducted amid tight police presence and heightened public attention.
Captioning the video that shows the moment the alleged police officer removed his glasses, Sowore wrote, “CAUGHT ON CAMERA: This Nigeria Police Force officer, dressed in mufti, stole my AI Rayban glasses at the Force headquarters during #PoliceProtest today.
“His superiors are shielding him. Please DM if you know his name and rank as soon as possible!”
However, Sowore’s post has since gone viral, prompting widespread calls for transparency and accountability within the police force.
The protest aimed to demand fair pensions for retired officers and the removal of pensioners from the controversial contributory pension scheme, Dailyeconomy reports.
It may be recalled that the Nigeria Police Force has previously affirmed that citizens have the right to record police officers while performing their duties, a policy that has been reiterated several times by the Force spokesperson.
