The new Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Tanimu Turaki, has urgently called on United States President Donald Trump to intervene and “save democracy in Nigeria,” following a violent conflict at the party’s headquarters.

Turaki made the plea after police took control of the PDP secretariat in a clash between factions loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Seyi Makinde at the Wadata House.

He accused Wike of orchestrating the chaos with armed thugs in collusion with security forces.

Describing the situation, Turaki said, “It is not only the genocide of the Nigerian Christians that is facing issues in Nigeria, but also the democracy currently being practised in the country.”

He warned that democracy is “under threat” and appealed to the international community for urgent assistance.

Vowing resilience, Turaki declared, “I have said it before, we are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect our democracy and to protect our mandate.”

The crisis follows a recent national convention in Ibadan where Turaki was elected chairman and Wike, along with former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose, was expelled from the party.
