In a statement on Sunday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, stated, “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command was drawn to a video currently circulating on social media involving a police officer in the process of subduing a violent bus conductor of a commercial bus in order to effect his arrest for an offence of obstruction of Public Officials, including Police Officers and LASTMA officers in carrying out their official duties.”
According to the statement, the conductor “deliberately used the bus to obstruct traffic flow and thereby prevented other road users from using the public way and also caused traffic gridlock,” which led to the confrontation.
During the arrest attempt, the conductor “stripped himself, resisted arrest and escaped from the scene,” prompting the video recording.
The Police confirmed the officer involved has been identified and is “currently being investigated to determine the appropriateness of his actions in the incident.”
The conductor has been summoned for an interview with the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, on Monday.
The Police also confirmed that bus has been impounded for further inquiries.
CP Jimoh implored the public to “be law-abiding at all times; report promptly any conduct of violation of their rights by Police officers,” emphasising that “justice will be done” and that the Command is committed to “proper transparency and accountability.”
