Video: Police’s media parley to prove Sowore ‘well-treated’ ends in violence

A media parley arranged by the Nigeria Police to assert that detained activist Omoyele Sowore is being “well treated” has collapsed amid fierce backlash from the activist.

Instead of calming tensions, the event escalated demands for the immediate removal of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, whom the activist labels as “illegal.”

Sowore, a prominent human rights advocate and former presidential candidate, was arrested after responding to a police summons and is facing charges including forgery and inciting public disturbance.

His detention has been widely condemned amidst reports of alleged police brutality.

His lawyer, Tope Temokun, stated, “Sowore was forcibly moved to an undisclosed location early Thursday, sustaining severe injury to his arm and subjected to what is believed to be noxious gas released into his cell. These are vivid attempts on his health, life, and dignity”.
