In a blistering attack during impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule declared the governor “a mistake,” lamenting that the state “has never had it this bad.”

Amaewhule’s outburst came amid escalating tensions over the state’s delayed 2026 budget.

He singled out Fubara and Port Harcourt City Local Government Area Chairman Professor Ngozi Ordu as the only sub-national leaders in Nigeria yet to present an appropriation bill.

“The government does not even want to present, because if it wanted, he would have brought it all this way,” Amaewhule fumed.

“Siminalayi Fubara is a mistake! He’s a MISTAKE!! Rivers State has never had it this bad in the entire of Nigeria,” he added.

He escalated further, warning of dire consequences for democracy saying, “Siminalayi Fubara and Professor Ngozi Ordu—they are nothing but a threat to our nascent democracy. If they’re allowed to remain in office, I don’t know what will become of that democracy.”

Amaewhule accused Fubara of defying federal directives, claiming the governor boasts that “this assembly, we cannot do anything” even after President Bola Tinubu intervened.

“Who would believe that in this 21st century, we will not have an appropriations bill either presented or passed?” he asked, calling the situation “a sad commentary for our democracy.”

The proceedings highlight deepening rifts between the assembly—aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike—and Fubara’s faction, raising fears of political instability in the oil-rich state.
