Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud has condemned Iran for its aggressive actions against fellow Islamic countries, questioning Tehran’s self-proclaimed role as a defender of Muslim interests.

“I do not understand how they claim to defend Islamic causes while attacking Islamic countries,” Prince Faisal stated in a pointed address.

He listed a litany of targets, “Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Türkiye all are Islamic countries, and all have been targeted.”

The minister highlighted Iran’s track record of meddling, even before the current war.

“They supported the Houthi militia in Yemen. They supported militias in Iraq and now they are attacking Iraqi territory,” he said.

He also accused Iran of interfering in Lebanon via Hezbollah, “not only hijacking political decision-making but also carrying out destabilising actions across the region, including in Saudi Arabia.”

Prince Faisal pointed to “one of the clearest examples” as Iran and Hezbollah’s role in Syria, before broadening his critique: “How can they claim to support Islamic causes while backing regimes that oppress their own people, assassinating political figures in Lebanon, and empowering militias that hinder development in Iraq?”

Dismissing Iran’s rhetoric as empty, he said, “I do not see any real support for Islamic causes. These are merely slogans used as cover. In reality, these tools are used to serve Iranian interests not the principles they claim to defend.”

The remarks come as tensions boil over Iranian strikes on Gulf energy facilities, which have disrupted the fragile détente brokered by China in 2023.

However, Saudi officials have signaled readiness for military response if attacks persist.
