In a significant legislative development on Tuesday , the Senate has passed the second reading of a bill to amend the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU) Act.
The proposed amendment aims to remove the word “Technology” from the university’s name, effectively transforming ATBU from a specialised technology institution into a comprehensive, non-specialised university.
The amendment bill will enable ATBU to broaden its academic programs by introducing law courses and other non-technology related disciplines.
This move is designed to diversify the university’s offerings and meet the evolving educational needs of students and the nation.
Senators emphasised that this transition will strengthen ATBU’s position as a multi-disciplinary academic institution, promoting a wider variety of academic pursuits beyond its original technical focus.
The bill has now moved forward to subsequent stages before becoming law.
