On Friday, Simon Ekpa, a separatist activist from Finland with Biafran roots, appeared at the Päijät-Häme District Court as his trial on terrorism-related charges officially began.
Ekpa, who supports the independence of Nigeria’s South-East region as part of the Biafra movement, was arrested by Finnish authorities in November 2024.
He is accused of inciting violence and financing terrorism through his social media activities and statements.
Finnish prosecutors claim that Ekpa’s actions have contributed to unrest in Nigeria’s South-East and are pursuing a six-year prison sentence, asserting that his conduct may be classified as terrorism under Finnish law.
