The military forces made the announcement on state television, declaring the dissolution of the government and other state institutions.
Gunfire was reported at Camp Guezo, located near the president’s official residence, according to the French Embassy on X (formerly Twitter).
As of now, the whereabouts and condition of President Talon and his ministers remain unknown.
This coup follows closely on the heels of a similar military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, highlighting a troubling trend of instability in West Africa.
The region has witnessed numerous coups in recent years, including in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, raising concerns about the security and political future of West African nations.
