Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has described Nnamdi Kanu’s detention as an unjust treatment based on ethnic and political grounds.

Sowore said in a recent interview with Arise TV said, “If you mention his name in certain circles, they don’t want to hear it, because they feel like he threatens the real estate called Nigeria.”

He pointed to historical tensions, saying, “Nigeria’s DNA hates the Igbo for attempting, you know, in the 60s, and you know, towards the end of the 70s, to leave, they said, is no longer favourable to their existence.”

Sowore also emphasised the widespread disillusionment among Nigerians noting, “Is any Nigerian out there in the majority who has not mentally suicided from Nigeria? Not many. That’s why people are living in droves. Each time you get on a plane leaving this country is full.”

On the controversial circumstances surrounding Kanu’s detention, Sowore stressed the illegality of his rendition, stating, “Nnamdi Kanu has been held hostage. He was abducted from Kenya, extraordinary rendition. The fact that he’s kidnapped from Kenya could not be explained, shows that any judicial pronouncement or processes after that are unavoidable.”

He criticized the judicial process, saying, “Even up to the Supreme Court, they made all the pronouncements except releasing him.”

Sowore also accused a divide in treatment of separatist agitators, noting, “Other people have made even more egregious pronouncements and fought and carried arms, and you have not treated them the same way because they’re not Nnamdi Kanus. Their name does sound east.”

Finally, he disclosed internal political sabotage, warning, “There are some Igbo elites who are behind this whenever there’s a crime of conspiracy against freedom fighters there are people inside and outside who are working together.”
