United States President Donald Trump has suggested the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, could reopen “very soon” under joint control potentially involving the U.S. and Iran’s leadership.

Responding to questions about control of the vital waterway, Trump stated, “That’ll be opened very soon, if this works.”

Pressed on timelines and authority, he added, “It will be jointly controlled. Maybe me and whoever the Ayatollah is.”

Trump also alluded to ongoing regime dynamics in Iran, describing a “very serious form of regime change” where “everybody has been killed from the regime. They’re really starting off. There’s automatically a regime change.”

He praised some Iranian figures as “very reasonable, very solid” and “respected,” hinting one might emerge as a leader akin to Venezuela’s president-elect.

“Look at Venezuela — how well that is working out. We are doing so well with the president-elect and maybe we find somebody like that in Iran,” he said.

The comments come amid heightened tensions over the strait, through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes.
