Former Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba shared a candid anecdote about negotiating with Donald Trump, advising diplomats to avoid direct confrontation to prevent outbursts.
In a recent interview reflecting on his three meetings with Trump during his presidency, Ishiba explained the challenges of engaging the U.S. leader.
“I met with Trump three times. If you tell him, ‘You’re wrong,’ he gets angry. If you say, ‘You’re wrong, let me correct you,’ he immediately starts shouting,” Ishiba recounted.
“You simply can’t say things like that. You have to keep telling him, ‘Yes, you’re right.’ If he suddenly gets angry, you’re in trouble.”
