Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Copenhagen on Sunday, chanting “Greenland is not for sale” and waving Danish flags in fierce opposition to United States President Donald Trump’s renewed push to annex the Arctic territory from Denmark.

The demonstration, captured in video footage, erupted in response to Trump’s revival of his 2019 proposal to purchase Greenland for its strategic Arctic position.

He has now escalated threats by imposing 10-25% tariffs on eight European nations tied to military activities there, framing it as essential for US control over vital resources and security routes.

Protesters decried the demands as imperialistic, emphasising Greenland’s status as an autonomous Danish territory with its own government and Inuit-majority population.

Protesters carried signs reading “Hands Off Greenland” and “No to American Annexation,” highlighting fears of resource exploitation amid melting ice revealing untapped minerals and shipping lanes.

The uproar contrasts sharply with the backlash in the US where a congressional delegation publicly rejected Trump’s plan as unreflective of American values.

Social media reactions on X remain deeply divided: some users mocked Denmark’s priorities amid its own migration debates, while others championed Greenlandic independence, exposing fractures in transatlantic ties over Arctic dominance.

Denmark’s government has firmly rebuffed the overtures, with officials stressing sovereignty and international law.
