President Bola Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that he does not plan to establish a one-party state, labeling such concerns as baseless and misguided.

In response to critics’ worries, the president stated that a one-party system is neither desirable nor acceptable for Nigeria’s democratic framework.

“To those who raise alarms suggesting that the APC aims for a one-party state, I make a personal commitment. While your concerns may stem from anxiety, they are misplaced,” Tinubu asserted.

This statement was part of a broader address during a Joint Session of the National Assembly, which was part of the Democracy Day celebrations.

He stressed that he will never support the dismantling of Nigeria’s multiparty political system, whether in the past, present, or future.

“At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria. I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC,” the president stated.

Tinubu however, said people seeking to exit their parties should not be blamed, noting, “We cannot blame anybody seeking to bail out of a sinking ship even without a life jacket.”
