The move follows a recent attempted coup in Benin, which President Patrice Talon sought Nigerian support to help stabilise the situation.
In his letter to the Senate, President Tinubu explained that the deployment aligns with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocols and is grounded in the Nigerian Constitution, specifically Section 30, Subsection 5, which mandates consultation with the Nigeria Defence Council before such actions.
This request has been promptly referred to the Senate committee of the whole for urgent deliberation.
Previously, Nigeria had provided air intervention to counter the unconstitutional attempt to overthrow Benin’s government.
The proposed troop deployment emphasises Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability and support for democratic governance within West Africa.
