United States President, Donald Trump has declared that American forces executed a “large-scale strike” against Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

The bold assertion, made during a White House address, marks a dramatic escalation in US-Venezuela tensions and raises immediate questions about verification, international law, and global repercussions.

Trump detailed the operation with vivid specificity, stating that special forces swooped in under cover of night, overpowering Maduro’s security detail in Caracas.

“Maduro and his wife were captured and flown out of the country,” Trump proclaimed to a packed press room, framing the mission as a decisive blow against what he called a “narco-terrorist regime” destabilising the Western Hemisphere.

He credited advanced US intelligence and military precision, likening it to “the most successful raid since Bin Laden,” without disclosing operational timelines or troop involvement.

The claim comes amid years of US sanctions on Maduro’s socialist government, accused by Washington of human rights abuses, election fraud, and ties to drug cartels.

Maduro, who has ruled Venezuela since 2013, faced widespread protests and economic collapse under his watch, with hyperinflation and mass emigration plaguing the oil-rich nation.

Trump, in his second term, has repeatedly vowed to confront “failed states” like Venezuela, building on his first-term recognition of opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez denounced the statement as “imperialist fantasy” via state media, airing footage of Maduro allegedly presiding over a cabinet meeting hours after Trump’s announcement.

The UN Security Council called an emergency session, while allies like Russia and China condemned the US for “aggression,” vowing support for any Maduro counteroffensive.

Brazil and Colombia, key regional players, urged restraint and verification.

US officials offered no independent confirmation, with the Pentagon issuing a terse “no comment” on active operations.
