The suspect, reported to be an Afghan who arrived in the U.S. during the 2021 airlift, was also severely injured and taken into custody.
President Donald Trump, then in Florida, reacted strongly to the attack on social media, calling the suspect an “animal” who “will pay a very steep price” despite his own severe wounds.
President Trump expressed heartfelt support for the military and law enforcement, stating, “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People.”
He firmly positioned himself and all associated with the Office of the Presidency in solidarity with the injured servicemembers, saying, “I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!”
This message came amidst heightened security measures in Washington, D.C., including the temporary halting of flights at the city’s primary airport on the eve of Thanksgiving.
Former President Barack Obama also reacted on social media platform X, underscoring the unacceptable nature of violence in America.
“Michelle and I are praying for the servicemembers shot in Washington, DC today, and send our love to their families as they enter this holiday season under the most tragic of circumstances,” he wrote.
The attack initiated a wave of concern across political lines, raising discussions on national security and the safety of those protecting the nation’s capital.
