United States President Donald Trump has expressed deep disappointment over Iran’s recent appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader, following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on March 8.
Trump warned that the decision could perpetuate Iran’s instability, drawing parallels to past U.S. interventions.
In an exchange with journalists, Trump questioned the viability of Iran’s leadership transition.
“How can there be an Iran? Well, I don’t think it’s going to lead to just more of the same problem for the country, so I was disappointed to see their choice,” Trump stated.
When pressed on whether the new leader has “a target on his back,” Trump pivoted to advocate for stability.
He referenced the chaos after the 2003 Iraq invasion, saying, “We had, as you remember, Iraq, where everybody got fired, the military got fired, the police got fired, there was nobody, and you don’t want that.”
Trump emphasised preferring “a president of the country, very respected, doing a great job, and it’s no disruption,” hinting at an unnamed internal successor who aligns with U.S. interests.
Trump also alluded to ongoing economic partnerships, noting, “it’s brought to the refineries being refined in Houston. 100 million barrels of oil coming like a partnership. We’re getting along with them great. Venezuela, United.”
