United States President Donald Trump has expressed openness to negotiating a stringent nuclear deal with Iran, insisting on a ban on nuclear weapons and missiles, while criticising past U.S. administrations for enabling the regime’s rise.

Pressed by a reporter, “Do you think a deal with Iran, with this current regime would ever really stick?”

Trump replied, “I don’t know. I mean. I don’t know. I know one thing: They want to make a deal. They wouldn’t talk to anybody else, but they’re talking to me.”

Trump emphasised his preference for diplomacy but only on his terms, “It has got to be a good deal. No nuclear weapons, no missiles, all the different things that you want.”

He then turned fire on predecessors, calling the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) “one of the dumbest deals I have ever seen” and accusing Obama and Biden of “creating a monster with Iran” through their policies.

The remarks come amid stalled U.S.-Iran talks from 2025-2026, where a 60-day deadline expired without agreement.

Tensions escalated with an Israeli strike on Iranian facilities and U.S. naval deployments to the region to deter further conflict.
