In a video posted by the White House on X, Trump said, “Thousands and thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter.”
Trump announced Nigeria’s designation as a “country of particular concern” under U.S. legal standards, stating, “I am hereby making Nigeria a country of particular concern. When the Christians or any such group is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria, 3,100 versus 4,476 worldwide.”
He called for an immediate congressional response to address what he described as horrific statistics.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, spoke at a press conference in Abuja, acknowledging the country’s security challenges affecting both Christians and Muslims.
He said, “Nigeria faces longstanding security challenges that have impacted Christians and Muslims alike, and we mourn every loss of life—knowing that even a single loss of life is one too many.”
Idris highlighted the government’s strong stance against terrorism since President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023, noting, “Nigeria’s security agencies have neutralised more than 13,500 terrorists through sustained operations and arrested over 17,000 suspects.”
