During a meeting in the Oval Office on Wednesday, former United States President Donald Trump caught South African President Cyril Ramaphosa off guard by presenting a controversial video he claimed demonstrated that white South Africans are victims of genocide, prompting some to flee to the United States.

The surprise move disrupted what is typically a formal and diplomatic engagement, turning it into a platform for Trump to push his narrative that white farmers in South Africa are facing systemic persecution.
With media present and Ramaphosa visibly constrained in responding, Trump instructed his staff to play the video on a large screen.
The footage reportedly featured black South Africans allegedly discussing violence against white citizens, as Trump argued the content validated his concerns.
Trump said, “They’re white farmers, and they’re fleeing South Africa, and it’s a very sad thing to see. But I hope we can have an explanation of that, because I know you don’t want that.”
Ramaphosa made several attempts to respond, but his voice was repeatedly overshadowed. At one point, he appealed for restraint, saying, let’s “talk about it very calmly.”
He said, “We were taught by Nelson Mandela that whenever there are problems, people need to sit down around the table and talk about them. And this is precisely what we would also like to talk about.”
