United States President, Donald Trump has on Monday claimed that he would seize Iran’s oil reserves if given the chance, framing it as an easy opportunity for U.S. profit despite public pressure to withdraw troops from the region.

“Well, the thing — if I had my choice, what would I like to do? Take the oil? Because it’s there for the taking. There’s not a thing they can do about it,” Trump said.

He acknowledged domestic opposition to prolonged involvement, adding, “Unfortunately, the American people would like to see us come home.”

Trump then elaborated, “If it were up to me, I’d take the oil, I’d keep the oil, I would make plenty of money and I’d also take care of the people of Iran much better than they’ve been taken care of. Horrible. They’ve killed 45 thousand.”

The comments come amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.

Trump has previously discussed efforts to reopen the passage and secure access to regional oil supplies, as the conflict disrupts trade and energy markets.
