United States President Donald Trump has predicted the imminent collapse of Cuba’s current government during a speech today, directing Secretary of State Marco Rubio to wrap up a post-Iran diplomatic “deal” on the island nation in “maybe an hour.”
Speaking to supporters, Trump reflected on decades of U.S. frustration with Cuba, noting, “Cuba is a disaster, but we’ve been hearing so much of that. Cuba’s in its last moments of life as it was. It’ll have a great new life, but it’s in its last moments of life the way it is.”
He pivoted briefly to Iran as the administration’s top priority before turning back to Cuba, joking about Rubio’s workload, “Take about two days off, Marco? No, maybe an hour. He’ll take one hour off and then he’ll finish up a deal on Cuba. That will be an easy one.”
Trump noted audience pleas for action, adding, “Many of you have come today and they say, ‘I hope you can take care of Cuba’ because you’ve had problems with Cuba, right?”
The remarks revive Trump’s long-standing criticism of Cuba’s communist regime and align with Rubio’s personal family history of fleeing the island as a child.
