United States President Donald Trump has escalated diplomatic tensions with France on Tuesday, vowing to slap a staggering 200% tariff on French wine and champagne unless President Emmanuel Macron joins the US-led “Board of Peace” initiative aimed at resolving the Gaza conflict.

In a clip circulating widely online, Trump dismissed Macron’s reluctance, saying, “Well, nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon. That’s all right. What I’ll do is if they feel hostile, I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes and he’ll join.”
France has rejected the board, arguing it sidesteps United Nations frameworks.
Trump’s bold move echoes his 2019-2020 trade war with the EU, when 25% tariffs hit $1.3 billion in European goods—including French wine—costing exporters an estimated €500 million annually before partial suspensions.
The French wine industry, worth €15 billion yearly, sends 10% of its exports to the US, making it vulnerable.
