President Donald Trump has issued a warning on Friday against the UK and Canada deepening economic ties with China, calling it “very dangerous” amid ongoing US tariff battles with both allies.

Speaking to reporters, Trump criticised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent Beijing summit on January 29 and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s January 16 announcement of a strategic partnership to resume exports like beef and steel.

“Well, it’s very dangerous for them to do that and it’s even more dangerous I think for Canada to get into business with China,” Trump said.

“Canada is not doing well, they’re doing very poorly and you can’t look at China as the answer.”

The remarks align with Trump’s “America First” agenda, which rolled out 35% tariffs on Canada by August 2025 while extending China’s tariffs to 30%. Trump, who described Chinese President Xi Jinping as “a friend of mine,” added a lighthearted jab, “When you get Canada, the first thing they are going to say: You’re not allowed to play ice hockey anymore. That’s not good.”
