Lagbaja, who served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his death on November 5, 2024, was recognised for his exemplary leadership and strategic contributions to both Nigeria and international military communities.

Lagbaja passed away at the age of 56 after a period of illness.

Throughout his over three decades of military service, he led numerous critical security operations in Nigeria, including Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, and Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger states.

A distinguished alumnus of the US Army War College with a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, his induction reflects his commitment to excellence, his dedication to national security, and the mentorship he provided to many within the military ranks.

President Bola Tinubu expressed profound sadness at Lagbaja’s passing, praising his “invaluable” contributions to Nigeria’s military and offering condolences to his family and the entire Nigerian Armed Forces.

Lagbaja is survived by his wife Mariya and their two children. His legacy continues to inspire many in the Nigerian military and beyond.
