In a rebuke of Western narratives, Russia’s Ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, has declared Moscow’s firm backing of Iran as the US-Israel military campaign against Tehran enters its second week.
The campaign, which kicked off with pre-emptive US and Israeli strikes on February 28 claiming to be targeting Iranian nuclear facilities and key leadership figures, has drawn sharp international divides.
Kelin, speaking in a recent interview, dismissed any notion of Russian neutrality.
“We are not neutral. No, we’re not neutral,” Kelin stated emphatically.
“We are supportive of Iran, of course, and we consider, as I have said, very negatively what is being done.”
He criticised the “logic at the moment for Western countries or some others that Iran is to blame for everything,” arguing that no one is holding the US and Israel accountable for initiating the aggression.
“Iran has only responded to this attack,” Kelin added, framing Tehran’s retaliatory actions as purely defensive.
Kelin’s comments align with Russia’s longstanding geopolitical posture against perceived Western interventions in the Middle East, potentially signaling deeper Moscow-Tehran coordination amid escalating tensions.
