A group of Nigerian youths staged a protest today at the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Area 3, Abuja, condemning the arrest and detention of social activist Martin Vincent Otseh, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

The protesters, who marched from the EFCC headquarters to GTBank and then to the National Human Rights Commission, carried placards demanding the immediate release of VDM.

They criticised the manner of his arrest, describing it as an act of kidnapping without a warrant or prior invitation for questioning.

One protester said, “His detention is unlawful. We want answers from the EFCC and GTBank on their roles in this arrest.”

Another added, “VeryDarkMan was arrested outside this GTBank branch on May 2nd in a joint operation by DSS, EFCC, and police. We demand his unconditional release.”

However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is reportedly seeking a court order to remand VDM pending his arraignment.

The protesters insist that his arrest is politically motivated and an attack on freedom of speech.
