The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC Ltd), Bashir Bayo Ojulari, declared on Thursday that the company is under attack by detractors opposed to the ongoing transformation efforts aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s oil sector.

Speaking at the NNPC Towers in Abuja while hosting a delegation from the Petroleum & Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Ojulari stressed the need for resilience and unity during this critical period of change.

“We are under attack. We will not budge to short-term pressure, as it will not be in the best interest of Nigerians. You cannot drive change without a price, and the transformation is tough,” Ojulari said.

He further urged Nigerians to exercise patience, emphasising that “the other side of change will benefit Nigeria and her citizens.”

Since assuming office five months ago, Ojulari
revealed that his team has prioritised the revival of the nation’s refineries through sustainable models such as the Incorporated Joint Venture (IJV) approach.

“Mr. President doesn’t pressure me to do the wrong thing. That is why we are looking at the baseline to ensure whatever we are doing, the refineries work sustainably going forward. We don’t want to pretend and just do some quick fix because there is pressure on us,” he explained.

Reaffirming his commitment, Ojulari stated, “I am overwhelmed with the support from the union executives present here. The enemies of this company and Nigerians will not win.”

In response, PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo expressed gratitude to the NNPC management for their collaboration during the recent 2025 PENGASSAN Energy & Labour Summit (PEALS).

He highlighted the progress under Ojulari’s leadership, notably improvements in pipeline operations and a notable reduction in crude oil theft.

He thereby concluded by remarking, “Our pipelines are now working. Also, crude oil theft has significantly reduced, leading to increased production.

“As PENGASSAN, we assure you that we are solidly behind you. We will work with you and collaborate with your team to ensure the stability of the system for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
